What can you learn from Dylan?
BassI've been playing bass since 1998 and have been teaching since 2010. I am comfortable with complete beginners and can teach several styles. I can help you crafting basslines, soloing, and navigating the fretboard. And I can help you get started with good technique and habits.

PianoAside from being a beautifully expressive instrument, piano is such a useful tool for any musician to learn. It's all laid out right in front of you, I firmly believe that any musician will benefit from learning their way around the keyboard. I can help you to accompany yourself or others and learn to learn songs quickly and easily. I can help you interpret chord changes and lead sheets and help you to navigate the keyboard. And even to start writing your own music.

ImprovisationLet those ideas flow naturally. Whether you're just playing around on your own or with a group, writing or playing a tune, we want to be comfortable when things go as planned and when they don't. Get that music off the page and into your heart so you can put your own flavor in it!

Music TheoryChords! Scales! Keys! Notes! Rhythms! Genres! How does it all fit together?? What are the common patterns and "rules" of music and how can we effectively break them? Music theory is the grammar of this beautiful language, and it helps us to effectively communicate with other musicians.

ProductionIn this modern technological world it is becoming increasingly important for musicians to be able to record themselves and know their way around a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). And with modern technology it's never been more accessible. I mainly use Ableton and Protools, but I have also helped people learn Logic X and Garageband. I can help you understand EQ, compression, reverb, mixing, recording and crafting a song.

What people are saying about Dylan
"I have wanted to learn guitar ever since my great grandfather gifted me a guitar but didn't think I was musical after a bad experience with music lessons as a kid. I decided to give guitar another go and working with Dylan has been one of the keys to my success. Dylan is easy to talk to, provides constructive feedback without judgment, and has helped me set goals and stay accountable to them. He also brings something that most instructors don't: an understanding of the importance of mindset to be able to set and keep a guitar practice habit. After 8 weeks of lessons and mostly daily practice, I can now say that I am a guitar player. I'm looking forward to continuing my guitar journey with Dylan and would recommend him to anyone who wants to pick up an instrument."
"Dylan and I have been working together for just over three months now, and I’ve already seen vast improvements in my piano. I’ve been able to go from playing songs at 70 to 200 on the metronome, which was something that used to scare me. He has also helped build confidence with my playing and increased my knowledge of music theory. This has encouraged me to do more improvisation, which is something I never pictured myself doing, but now I’ve been able to hear chords to some of my favorite songs and play them on the piano. Dylan is very patient and encouraging during each of our lessons. I’m so excited to have found him and look forward to continued lessons with him. I would recommend Dylan for anyone looking to improve their piano playing."
Jeffrey“I wanted to learn to play the upright bass, but doubted I would get very far considering my age (52), despite being a musician all my life. I figured I’d either fail to find the time to practice or I wouldn’t learn anything from a younger teacher. I’m so glad I found Dylan, he had the patience to deal with me and … actually TEACH me things! So yes, this old dog has learned new tricks. Dylan did this by taking an individual approach to my musicianship and learning style. Lots of teachers say they can do this, but Dylan is the real deal.”

"Dylan is a phenomenal music teacher and helped me develop my own style and confidence in my abilities as a musician. I took bass lessons from Dylan from 2011-2015 and in that time we learned many different genres and styles of music that would later on help me further develop my own ear and skill set. I remember at one point I was beginning to feel restless with practicing the kinds of songs I was playing at the time and Dylan took it a notch up and had us read through the entire Cello Suite Prelude by Bach and to this day I still find joy in running through that song on my bass. Dylan is versatile, friendly, supportive and all around a great teacher for any age group and any level of experience with music."
Gitai"Dylan is by far the best music teacher I've ever had. While I've always enjoyed playing music, learning from Dylan is the first time where I feel like I understand what I'm doing. I'm not just playing notes, I'm understanding why I'm playing those notes, how my instrument works, and feel like I understand music well enough to start composing, not just reciting. I keep telling my friends about him, and how if he'd been my music teacher when I was a kid, I'd be a professional musician now because he's just so good at getting me excited about my instrument and music."
Magnus"I have been getting lessons from Dylan for a few months now and my bass skills have gone through the roof. He is really good at his explanations, he is well versed in music theory, and is just a great guy as well. I would highly recommend Dylan for anyone of any skill level out there because I can guarantee that you will learn something new."
Zac"Dylan Hughes is a wonderful teacher, able to adapt to my own needs as a guitar student. He helped activate my creative side and I truly looked forward to my sessions with him every week."
Ella"I took guitar lessons with Dylan once a week and he was a fabulous teacher! As a beginner, he was patient with teaching me the basics of guitar theory and chords for songs I wanted to learn. I appreciated him wanting to make sure I really understood what I was learning and perfecting it. He was encouraging, helpful, and always made the lessons something I looked forward to!"
